What is this all about?
We are a group of parishioners associated with Clifton Roman Catholic Cathedral in Bristol (UK) who have spent the last three years working towards obtaining sponsorship status within the Home Office’s Community Sponsorship Scheme (CSS - see Links page) in order to be able to sponsor a family of refugees from the wars in the Middle East.
The family chosen by the Home Office to come to Bristol is a Syrian family. The families who come to the UK under the CSS are chosen by the UNHCR from among the most needy cases.
Having successfully obtained sponsorship status through a rigorous appraisal system, we were allocated a refugee family by the Home Office. The Home Office/UNHCR was responsible for all e.g. medical and security checks and travel arrangements. For our part in Bristol we at the CRSS are responsible for welcoming, housing, making friends with and integrating the family into the local community.
We welcomed a family to Bristol in early October 2019.
Please do watch the short YouTube video below to explain all about it. If you would like to watch more explaining the scheme, there is also a nice short animation at resetuk.org/community-sponsorship
